216 'The name Tawier, Tare, Tayer or Thayer, is of ancient English origin, and meant from the Anglo-Saxon root word 'Taw', to dress skins to make them into leather.' The family owned land in Thornbury since the reign of Edward II. 'Richard Thayer of Thornbury, which lies in the western part of Gloucestershire, England, about eleven miles north of Bristol, came to Boston, in New England, about the year 1640; he was a freeman in that year, and moved to Braintree in the year 1641.'-(Mass. Hist. Soc. Coll. 4th Series, V : 105) 'When Richard Thayer, a widower with eight children, came to New England he was in very humble circumstances, and was allowed to sojourn in a remote and obscure part of the Town of Braintree, until he purchased four acres of land for a few shillings. The old house of Richard Thayer was near the corner of Middle and Union Streets, and was used, until after 1677, as garison depot for protection against the Indians. He was a member of the church at Braintree, and by occupation a farmer, cordwainer, and with his older brother Thomas Thayer, who was freeman 26 May 1647,shoemakers.' 'Richard Thayer returned to Boston about 1646, where as Richard Tare he married Jane the widow of John Parker; he and his second wife and her children proposed to return to England after 1658, but from letters written by him to his sons Zachariah and Richard from Barbados in 1660, there is reason to believe that his death occurred on that island in the West Indies. His son Nathaniel, and Katherine Thayer, a probable daughter by his second wife, were with him and his wife on the island.' Linzee 529. Tayer, Richard (I678)

217 'The organization of the Lombard Investment Company was devised and brought to a successful issue by James L. Lombard, aided largely by B. Lombard, jr., in its details at the east, and from a company with $125,000 capital and eight ight stockholders it has grown to a corporation with $1,150,000 and $400,000 surplus. It has three hundred and seventy-five wealthy and influential stockholders, representing the very best men in almost every important city over the New England and many of the leading cities of the Middle States, and it is probable that there are very few corporations, if any, in existence at the present time, the combined wealth of whose stockholders will represent such a large amount as the aggregate wealth of the stockholders of this corporation. Lombard, James Lewis (I23481)

His will dated Nov.19,1689 proved Dec.26,1689 (S.D. 2-129, New
Series) mentions wife Sarah, oldest son Jonathan executor and gives
to son William land that was formerly my brother Samuel's, mentions
sons Samuel & Benjamin, daughter Hannah Mills, and daughters
Huldah, Deborah, and Sarah, under 18 years. He inherited the
homestead of his father as the other children all left town, and
bequeathed it to his son Jonathan. "Breakneck Hill" on Liberty St.
south of Plain St. is traditionally the site of his fatal accident,
but this is very doubtful as it was not near his home and this road
was not laid out until 1715.[:CR:]
