- Dyer Emmett Freemont Sanborn, eldest son of Josiah and Adelaide (Eaton) Sanborn, was born 1 October 1856 near Cedar Rapids, Iowa. He died 16 January 1939 in Summerland, British Columbia, Canada. Emmett Sanborn married Anna Grace Kyler, daughter of Henry and Mary Stuart) Kyler on 6 February 1881 in Union Star, Missouri. She was born 26 January 1863 at Dayton, Ohio [Chamberburg, Pennsylvania] and died 20 April 1945 in Summerland. In the late 1870's, Emmett Sanborn accompanied his older sister and her husband, Emiline and Mark Burgess, to Kansas. The Burgess' settled near Palco, Kansas. From there, Emmett Sanborn travelled eastward, arriving in Union Star, Missouri. According to his son, Earl Sanborn, when he first rrived he saw some apples and was going to buy 25 cents worth. The settlers wanted to know what he was going to put them in; that amount of money would purchase about one bushel. After Emmett and Anna Sanborn were married, they remained in Union Star until 1887, when they migrated to Nebraska. The original destination was somewhere in Wyoming, but they were caught in a snow storm near Gordon, Nebraska. When the storm was over, they only had one horse left. The Sanborn family homestead near Merriman, Nebraska, on the Niobrara River, the principal stream along Nebraska's northern border. Emmett Sanborn dug a hole in the side of the hill, put a roof on it. That is where his family spent their first winter in Nebraska. He later built a house of sods in which they lived until 1896. From that farm they moved to another in the same vicinity where they also farmed and gardened. Today in this area, one can find a valley called Sanborn Valley, Emmett Sanborn planted trees there about 1885. In 1891 Emmett took his family to visit his folks in Iowa. They stayed with Josiah and Adelaide Sanborn all summer. This visit was a surprise in that no one knew Emmett because of the number of years since he had last seen his folks, 12 years. At the turn of the century, with the establishment of new railroad systems which opened many new lands, Alberta, Canada was being invaded with new settlers from Estern Canada, overseas, and the United States; settlers were seeking free homesteads provided by the Homestead Act of 1875. Through correspondence with a man that had gone to Canada from Gordon, Nebraska, Emmett Sanborn became interested in this new country which was opening up. Having a yen for frontier life, he sold all his land in Nebraska and on 14 May 1909, with his family and three well loaded prairie schooners started for Canada. The journey lasted for 3 months, ending near Innisfail, Alberta, on the 19th of August. Emmett and his two older sons, Earl and Frank, took a homestead in the bush west of Innisfail. The day following their arrival, they started putting up hay. Later Emmett Sanborn bought an additional half section of land, making a nice sized farm and prospered with his farming for the next few years. He later sold that farm and bought another parcel of land in the same area where they also did well, farming and dairying. Besides the farm activities, he was a trapper and hunter, having done this in Nebraska as well. He acquired many of his hunting skills from the Sioux Indians. In 1918 when he was ready to retire, he sold all his land in Alberta and bought 10 acres of newly planted orchard in Summerland, British Columbia. Being dissatisfied with that place, he traded it for another which also was in orchard, but more land. There he stayed with his wife for the remainder of his years. CHILDREN: i.
