  Note	In early life Roger Foster Haviland was a farmer, but in the early '60's he went to Peekskill, N.Y., and became the first agent there for the American Express Co. Later he engaged in the grocery business. In 1867, he purchased (with his brother-inlaw, Willis Hoag Haviland, and George M. Ferris) the drug and general store of G.W. Sisson. The firm went under the name of Havilands & Ferris. In 1881, Willis Haviland retired, and the firm's name became Haviland & Ferris. They were among the leading drug houses of N.Y. State, dealing in all classes of drugs, patent medicines, paints, oils, sash and door blinds. In 1882 they added another store and kept a full line of builder's hardware and carpenter tools for both wholesale and retail trade. Roger is listed as Inspector of Elections of Glens Falls, 1861, 62; as Vestryman for the Church of the Messiah (Episcopal), 1867, 68, 85. On Jan. 22, 1889 he climbed up on his roof to shovel away some snow, and he slipped and fell to the ground and died.
