- 1. JOHN7 PUTNAM (NICHOLAS6, JOHN5, RICHARD4, HENRY3, NICHOLAS2 PUTTENHAM, WILLIAM1) was born 1579 in Aston Abbotts, Buckinghamshire, England, and died December 30, 1662 in Salem Village, Massachusetts (now called Danvers). He married PRISCILLA GOULD in England.

John Putnam Sr. was about 80 years old when he died. It is known he was a resident in Aston Abbotts, England, as late as 1627, as the date of the baptism of his youngest son shows, but just when he came to new England is unknown. Family tradition is responsible for the date of 1634, and we know that the tradition has been in the family for over one hundred and fifty years. In 1641, new style we find the following entry on the Town Records of Salem:
At a meeting the 20th of the 11th moneth (1640 old style)
Mr. Endecott
Mr. Hawthorne ground (etc.)
John Woodbury Graunted to Allyn Convers of planting

Graunted to John Putnam (ffiftie) one hundred acres of land at the head of Mr. Skeltons farm between it and Elias Stileman the elder his farm, if there be an hundred acres of it. (Only protion, rest is found in Eben Putnams "A History of the Putnam Family. Not until 1640-1 do we have any reliable information concerning him. John Putnam ws a farmer and exceedingly well off for those times. He wrote a fair hand as deeds on file show.

v. SARA PUTNAM, b. March 07, 1622/23, Salem Village, Massachusetts (now called Danvers).
