- Family legend: Walter Earle Emerson, son of Charles E. Emerson & Eleanor Jane Stanbridge (widow of Henry D, Davis). Her parents were William Stanbridge & Jane Peters. Jane was in fact the dau. of John Russell, or Lord John Russell, whose brother was Edward; John was once head of the Bank of England. He disinherited Jane when she married William Stanbridge; they went off to Canada, where Jane had to do with the establishment of the school system. One of Jane's brothers married a Frenchman; another was named Edward Russell. Jane named her dau. Eleanor after a close friend who was a lady-in-waiting to Queen Victoria. The Stanbridges were from Reigate. Comments: Neither Lord Russell nor any other Russell was head of the Bank of England, but he was once Lord of the Treasury. Reigate records have no mention of Eleanor Jane, but of William, Jane Peters, ch. Mark O., Rebecca, etc. A lady-in-waiting was Eleanor Stanley. In the Bedford family there is a son of John, named Edward; another son (brother of Edward & other & half-brother to John's ch. by a second wife), Arthur, who married a Frenchwoman, Laura de Peyronnet. Fitzwilliam, NH death records give Eleanor Jane's mother's maiden name as Russell, fa. brick manufacturer.
