He was apparently a minor when he fell heir to his brother William. He sided with the Barons against King John in 1215, for which his lands were forfeited. By Nov 1217, he had sworn allegiance to John's son, Henry III. His own very rich inheritance & feudal influence were augmented by his marriage to Joan Marshall. 'Matthew Paris says hew as above all things zealous for the peace and liberty of England.
