He, four years old, was carried to Canada along with his father, an older brother, and his little sister Eunice. A French lady in Montreal redeemed him from the Indians and cared for him for three years until his father and older brother were able to return to Deerfield. The brothers were Harvard graduates and both were ministers of the gospel.'
